Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School

I picked up Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School this morning. My oldest daughter is in the third grade, and she loves this series. She is going to claim this book as soon as she gets home from school, so I took some time to read it before then.

There is a lot going on in this book. The pet pig (from the last book) seems to have more privileges than Greg, Grandpa moves in with the Heffleys, Rodrick gets a job at the ice cream parlor, and a good chunk of the book is devoted to Greg’s weeklong school trip to an old fashioned farm.

As with the other books in the series, the book appears to have been written on notebook paper. The font looks like a child’s handwriting, and the book is filled with funny stick figure illustrations. This is definitely part of what makes the Wimpy Kid books such a fun series. My oldest daughter loves to read and her fluency is advanced, but she is reluctant to read “novels” because she doesn’t like that they don’t have pictures. Books like these are wonderful for children like my daughter, as well as reluctant readers.

Of course, the biggest draw to this book- and the series as a whole- is the humor. Sometimes the series gets a bad rap because the humor tends to be a little immature, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not funny. I found myself smiling as I read through this book, and Greg’s vision of the future- telling a drone that he didn’t want mayonnaise on his burger- had me laughing out loud. And Greg is downright insightful when he says that older people’s recollections of the “good old days” are not always as accurate as they think.

I would recommend Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. This is an immensely popular series. Greg Heffley is ultimately a good kid. He doesn’t always make the right decisions, but there is usually a consequence as a result. Greg’s flaws are what make him easy to relate to, and to empathize with. After all, making mistakes is part of growing up. Greg might be stuck in middle school forever, but that just means that we can continue to appreciate his experiences during those awkward years between childhood and adolescence.

I might be the first person to have read this book. I think this best Diary of a Wimpy Kid yet! I really enjoyed reading this book because it was so funny! I hope others love it too!

Fun Time with No Electronic Devices (Except Dad's Webcam)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: OLD SCHOOL is book number 10 in this popular series (see the entire list at the end of this reivew.) If this is your first forray into the imaginative world of Jeff Kinney, you are in for a treat. The creator of these loony books continues his insightful wit, accompanied by cutting edge (if not exactly award-winning) artwork. I've noted before that the artwork reminds me a little of a Gary Larson cartoon mixed up with some "Dilbert" cartoons from Scott Adams.

If you remember where we left Greg Heffley the last time we saw him, the Heffley's vacation has taken a bad turn, complete with birds flying inside their car. In this installment, mom has decided that it's time to get rid of all electronic devices. Being a good social activist, Mom's getting the town to sign a petition. After all, she assumes, things were so much better back in the old days. To prove it, the whole family must now relive those days, bereft of all modern electronics and conveniences. Of course, this requires Gregory to visit an old-fashioned, rustic camp, complete with non-working toilets. He and his gang of ner-do-well campers make an ill-fated raid on the girl's cabin to get some deodorant, with poor results. Dad is called in to be an "emergency chaperone." Later, his buddies have to tear-down their cabin and use it for firewood.

With her "Back to the Good Ole Days" kick, Mom is a bit of a hypocrite, however. She uses a "Pet Tracker" app to keep track of the disobedient Gregory, who ends up running from a wild gang of Girl Scouts. It turns out that Dad has also installed a "Web Cam" in the house to watch Gregory's (and Grandpa's) misdeeds.

**HELP ME FIGURE OUT THIS ARTWORK**
On page 2, in the illustration of Gregory in the bathtub, thinking of days of old, there are a bunch of neighbors gathered at the window, looking in. I can't figure out what that container below the window is. Is that an ICE CHEST? If you know, please post a comment.

Minor Nit: In the Kindle edition that I purchased, the formatting works just fine. The illustrations all presented correctly, as did the text formatting, columns, etc. The only gripe I have is that the Table of Contents in the Kindle version is very skimpy--the TOC just lists page numbers; I could not navigate to different chapters.

All in all, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: OLD SCHOOL is a hilarious, fun read. Those "Good ole days" weren't really so great after all, were they? The artwork, in conjunction with the text, is really excellent, and adds a lot to the story. Perhaps my favorite illustration is on page 109, of the "PET TRACKER" that mom uses to find her son.

This book is a solid intro to developing a better connection to the people around you. It's full of step by step directions/explanations and straight forward tips to help you become more sensitive to your emotions and the emotions around you. For a lot of people the methods in this book could lead to an increase in self confidence and an increase in charisma that will help them get a lot more of what they want out of life. Charts of mitten designs are provided for knitters to use, regardless of language read or spoken. Museum quality. Encyclopedic scope of stranded mitten charts in the Latvian tradition. I have knitted a pair, and am wearing them. One of my favorite stranded knitting books, ever (from an experienced knitter).

Excellent and inspiring resource for fiber enthusiasts

I agree with several other reviewers: museum quality book. Excellent, detailed, clear photos and charts. Most pages have a knitting chart for the mitten on the left facing page and an actual finished mitten on the right hand page. This gives an experienced knitter clear and complete information on knitting the item (because you can look up detailed instructions on ravelry.com for the general technique involved in knitting this kind of mitten). Almost all the text is in Latvian, but it doesn't matter much because the images carry most of the information in this book. There are many examples of mitten stitch patterns, and they are quite beautiful. The experienced knitter will easily be able to adapt these stitch patterns to other kinds of items. There are two short essays in English in the book; these explain some of the traditional folk meanings behind some of the stitch patterns. This book is more expensive than most, but it presents information that is hard to find elsewhere in such quality and profusion.

My everlasting love of this book

Theodora has done it again. This book combined some of the best parts of several of her novels and composed them into one. With her previous wolf series she proved she could do shape shifter fiction and with this new novel she proves she ain’t afraid of no ghost either. This is one of my first forays into the paranormal but TT handles its beautifully and gracefully. She makes ghosts seem eerie yet magical.
The book itself was suspenseful with some unexpected plot twists that leave you unable to stop reading. I completed the book in one sitting and am actually eager to go back and re-read it. For previous TT readers, you will not be disappointed if you enjoyed the Owner of His Heart and His For Keeps, as this story draws from a similar storyline.
As for the characters, I enjoyed Willa and Sawyer’s storyline immensely. Sawyer as the tortured former SEAL amputee and Willa as his reluctant physical therapist just drew you in. I would highly recommend this book for any previous TT readers and as a great introduction to the author for any new readers. You won’t be disappointed.
The only drawback is TT has a knack for giving you other character storylines that the reader is eager to pursue. She has several storylines that are currently up in the air from other novels and she just added a new couple to watch for. This is bittersweet because I can’t wait to read these other novels but then I have to actually WAIT for the other novels. It’s the sweetest kind of agony.

Great Read with Paranormal Twist

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed the latest story in the 50 loving states series. The paranormal twist the story had was different from the plots in the previous books. It added an underlying layer of mystery to the story, as I was trying to figure out exactly how everything was connected. As always, the author did a great job of weaving together the story of Willa and Sawyer. Willa was a physical therapist who had the same propensity her mom had to be able to see and talk to ghosts even though she did not want to do either. Sawyer was the guy who bullied her in school, but had grown up many years later when they meet after his time in the military. They were an unlikely couple but their chemistry and pull to one another was obvious and couldn't be denied no matter how much either one tried to do it. I also loved all the humor in the book. The supporting characters were hilarious. I loved WIlla's mom and all the ghosts we got to meet throughout the story. I also appreciated the slight nod to some of the other characters in previous books as 1 or 2 were slyly mentioned. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a steamy, yet sweet love story with a few twists and turns that will keep you guessing throughout. I also cannot wait for Thel's story. Hope it comes out soon.

Didn't see that coming

I loved the paranormal story of Willa and Sawyer. At first I was an ardent fan of Ms Taylor's after being introduced to the Wolf series, but now the Fifty States boys have been added to the list. I just have to say, this story was just so sweet. This love that could maybe have only blossomed for Sawyer when he was totally taken out of his element, had me sitting on the edge of my seat for the finale. His Everlasting love, was filled with humor from both Willa and Sawyers mothers. Then we have Willa's secretive sister Thel and then the overbearing Admiral, who is so lonely , he can't help but mess things up. Overall, Ms. Taylor did it again with this story of loves triumph when you have faith, trust and acceptance. And maybe a little help from a ghost or two.

Voluble And Valuable

This is a collection of interviews that the famous writer/provocateur/shaman Alan Moore gave between 1982 and 2009. Moore is well-known for his volubility, and fans of this aspect of his personality will not be disappointed by the material collected herein. There is a slight problem with redundancy here (Moore, for example, is quite fond of recounting his process for the plotting of the unfinished comics series Big Numbers 1, discussions of which occur more than once here), but editor Eric L. Berlatsky has corrected against this by primarily selecting interviews that discuss individual works of Moore's (Watchmen, Lost Girls, etc.)

One of the great pleasures of this collection is the numerous bon mots that Moore creates with such apparent effortlessness. Some examples:

On writing as propaganda: "I'm aware of how words can change people's minds, can change the way people think. So are all of the advertisers, so are all of the politicians, so are all of the people who run our lives. They're not pulling any punches. I would say it is beholden unto any writer to equally not pull any punches on the other side. If you believe something, if you believe something is right or something is wrong then yeah, try and convince other people. Spread the idea around like a designer virus. Make it so other people will repeat it."

On genres: "My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres. It's a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction, cowboy, detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you're lucky."

On the film adaptation of Watchmen: "Putting it cruelly, I guess it's good that there's a children's version for those who couldn't manage to follow a superhero comic from the 1980s."

Briefly put, this book is a kick in the pants. It's also a valuable resource for Moore fans and scholars. If you are one, you'll want to have a copy of this.

Candid and insightful interviews with a comics master

Alan Moore is a fascinating subject for an interview. Not only are his works among the finest in comics history, unique in their depth, conviction and intellect, but Moore as a person is similarly one-of-a-kind. The interviews collected here present Moore on a range of subjects and span most of his career. The book is well worth the attention of anyone interested in Moore's work, or comics in general. A handy tome featuring some of Moore's finest interviews, this collection is a welcome addition to any Alan Moore library. Buy it.

CHAPTER I Those men and women are fortunate who are born at a time when a great struggle for human freedom is in progress. It is an added good fortune to have parents who take a personal part in the great movements of their time. I am glad and thankful that this was my case. One of my earliest recollections is of a great bazaar which was held in my native city of Manchester, the object of the bazaar being to raise money to relieve the poverty of the newly emancipated negro slaves in the United States. My mother took an active part in this effort, and I, as a small child, was entrusted with a lucky bag by means of which I helped to collect money. Young as I was—I could not have been older than five years—I knew perfectly well the meaning of the words slavery and emancipation. From infancy I had been accustomed to hear pro and con discussions of slavery and the American Civil War. Although the British government finally decided not to recognise the Confederacy, public opinion in England was sharply divided on the questions both of slavery and of secession. Broadly speaking, the propertied classes were pro-slavery, but there were many [Pg 2]exceptions to the rule. Most of those who formed the circle of our family friends were opposed to slavery, and my father, Robert Goulden, was always a most ardent abolitionist. He was prominent enough in the movement to be appointed on a committee to meet and welcome Henry Ward Beecher when he arrived in England for a lecture tour. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," was so great a favourite with my mother that she used it continually as a source of bedtime stories for our fascinated ears. Those stories, told almost fifty years ago, are as fresh in my mind to-day as events detailed in the morning's papers. Indeed they are more vivid, because they made a much deeper impression on my consciousness. I can still definitely recall the thrill I experienced every time my mother related the tale of Eliza's race for freedom over the broken ice of the Ohio River, the agonizing pursuit, and the final rescue at the hands of the determined old Quaker. Another thrilling tale was the story of a negro boy's flight from the plantation of his cruel master. The boy had never seen a railroad train, and when, staggering along the unfamiliar railroad track, he heard the roar of an approaching train, the clattering car-wheels seemed to his strained imagination to be repeating over and over again the awful words, "Catch a nigger—catch a nigger—catch a nigger—" This was a terrible story, and throughout my childhood, whenever I rode in a train, I thought of that poor runaway slave escaping from the pursuing monster. These stories, with the bazaars and the relief funds and subscriptions of which I heard so much talk, I[Pg 3] am sure made a permanent impression on my brain and my character. They awakened in me the two sets of sensations to which all my life I have most readily responded: first, admiration for that spirit of fighting and heroic sacrifice by which alone the soul of civilisation is saved; and next after that, appreciation of the gentler spirit which is moved to mend and repair the ...

Emmeline Pankhurst (n�e Goulden; 15 July 1858 – 14 June 1928) was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement which helped women win the right to vote. In 1999 Time named Pankhurst as one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century, stating: "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back." She was widely criticized for her militant tactics, and historians disagree about their effectiveness, but her work is recognized as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in Britain.

Great manuscript!

I never expected to get the actual manuscript, corrections,remarks and all, when I bought this book. It's a copy of the original manuscript, warts and all. It's really good reading. Gives a true insight as to what she had to actually go through to help get women the vote.

fascinating!

Absorbing contemporary account of the militant arm of the women's suffrage movement in Great Britain. This book reads easily and held my interest throughout. I had to look up some of the references to people and events but did not feel that detracted from my experience of reading this book. I found my sympathetic reaction to Mrs. Pankhurst's justifications for advocating property damage disturbing as I am normally opposed to violence as a means of political expression. I was relieved to read that the group took pains to avoid injuring people. I hope that is true although I am sure that unintended injuries must have resulted from some of their activities. Overall, I got to learn some history, a window into Mrs. Pankhurst's views, experiences and values and a sense of what it felt like to live in that time. I was also challenged to look at my own values. The Kindle edition that I read was free so the only cost to me was time: a very worthwhile investment.
