Irresistible APIs is not bad book per Se

The book is written by Kirsten Hunter who is an API evangelist who helps developers and business stakeholders understand, design, and deliver APIs. The book is intended to all members of an API design team, regardless of technical level.
Irresistible APIs is not bad book per Se. However when sometime ago my friend experienced Java developer was surprised why book related to webAPI has so may pages, at that time I was thinking that he only concentrate at technical part and there the topic is not so narrow. After reading the book I see that he was right to some extent. First the author describes basics of REST API in quite nice way. Then book suddenly starts it prolonged advocacy part.

The book is not so technical, there are a lot advocacy in it and good arguments why approach API First is so important. And explanation why API added as extra feature is a very bad design decision. And also there are examples from business point of view describing how good and bad decisions had influence on companies like Netflix, Twitter etc. Of course it is very valuable from business point of view and advocacy. Agreeing with all of that I was reading next pages seeking when "the meat" part eventually will start. And it passed more than half of book with that advocacy style. Of course everything towards understanding how important creating of good API is. For companies for their third party clients and so on. I can agree with everything but it is pretty verbose.

Then author describes how to create good APIs and she proofs that using good user cases/stories is good approach, again agree. Then she introduces several designing API schemas tools like Open API (Swagger). In book there are several exercises which are intended to put reader hands on practical subject which is good. In case of using schema designing frameworks it lacks points where user is generating stubs and can use it.

Then authors starts to pack in a stuff which seems to be only to increase volume of book. So describing methodology like DDD, waterflow, agile and so on.

This is yet another book when I have impression that would be better if it had less pages, be less verbose and to the point. And I would like to have impression. Yes I spent a lot of time with book but I've learned a lot. I have grown.
Here from technical point of few there is a lot to add. From advocacy yes I've learned a lot of arguments why good API is crucial.

So if such arguments are very important for reader or maybe will be eye opener. Go ahead.

A must read for to anyone interested on the topic of creating APIs

Many good points on what it takes to make a well designed and developer friendly API.

I loved the emphasis of API first and how important is to account for business goals & metrics and the fact that you should always think that your API should be easy to use and satisfy/good experience for any developer.

You will read great examples of bad and good APIs designs from big companies such as Flickr, Twitter, Netflix and others.

Also, you'll have the opportunity to explore tools like RAML and OpenAPI

This book is one of my favorites! Be aware that this book doesn't tackle specific technologies to implement APIs. This book is intended to be accessible to anyone interested on the topic of creating APIs. So if you are an individual developer or technical lead, through product and project managers, and up to executives directing engineering organizations you will find valuable content on this book and start implementing Irresistible APIs!

This book takes a very balanced approach to building API services. Author is a natural story-teller. I like her way of explaining concepts. Sections on use cases, schema models and best practices are my favorites.

The only point that I found pretty unfair were his comments on food

As a Dutch national but having lived abroad for nearly 30 years (4 of which in London) it was very interesting to read a foreigners take on the Netherlands (NOT Holland, that is only a part of it as the writer points out correctly:-)). Especially the historic background is helping to understand the cultural patchwork the Netherlands have been in the past, and still today. But, I did miss the analysis of why the Dutch are so egalitarian, partly caused by the continuous fight against the sea but also by the fact that the Netherlands was a Republic and largely lacked the hierarchy which was omnipresent in other European countries. Moreover, it was the Republic that ruled the world for about 150 years and royalty was reluctantly accepted. You will never in your life hear the Dutch saying Queen Wilheminian or Queen Julianian times...

The only point that I found pretty unfair were his comments on food. With some 160 Michelin star restaurants, of which twenty 2-star and two 3-star restaurants the Netherlands has a three times higher number of Michelin star restaurants per head of population than the UK; and even street food... not sure with whom Mr. Coates mixed, but I personally was brought up with the healthiest and tastiest kitchens in the world... and so were my friends.. maybe the street food is for tourists ??

All in all, I have a great deal of respect for writers like Mr Ben Coates and Russell Shorto; they make such good analysis of the people who largely created their own land and hence culture, although bold from time to time... we do admit.

like a favorite high school teacher

Recently I finished Bill Bryson’s latest travel book, “Notes from Little Dribbling”. While my much beloved author writes in his usual educational style, like a favorite high school teacher, dear Bill is becoming a bit grumpier in his waning years largely due to the fact that it will never be 1957 again and that his three-year old grandchildren can work a computer better than he can. So as I had just decided that this latest work of his would have been more aptly titled “Bill Bryson’s Great Big Book of Bitching”, along comes Ben Coates’ “Why the Dutch are Different”.

What a wonderful read. Intelligent and jaunty, Coates writes a spot-on description of life as an expat in the Netherlands. Braiding together his personal experiences with history, he presents a though-provoking interpretation of how individuals and events over a vast sweep of time make the Dutch who they are. It’s as if my wish that Bryson would cheer up and write a book about the Netherlands had been granted.

Coates parties at carnival, gazes at antiquities on Museumnacht, sails down the Maas, sings at a war remembrance ceremony, attends a demonstration, and solemnly visits the staging camp for Auschwitz as the backdrop of the book. Then selecting the most influential events and characters that over a vast sweep of time shaped Dutch society, he presents a chronicle of the Netherlands that is comprehensive without being tedious. This is something of a feat for a 287-page book.

As an expat living in the Netherlands myself, some of Coates’ personal experiences made me sigh with delight and recognition. Some of his conclusions were similar to those I had drawn myself over the years about why the Dutch behave the way they do, how the mentality of “You can do what you want to do, as long as you do it our way” ultimately came about (answer = it’s crowded). Other bits literally made me tear up, such as his paragraph describing the liberation of the Netherlands from the Germans in Word War II (which I was reading, strangely enough, while standing in line to board a flight to Munich). And it’s funny. Brilliantly funny. There may the unfortunate repetition of some phrases, such as “…wobbling home after too many Heinekens…”, however in his defense I suppose this was likely to have occurred more than once.

In reading the other posts here, I would like to respond to comment of the reviewer who thinks Coates is unkind to the food. I would suggest that it’s not so much the quality of the food here…the cheese is great, the salmon’s fresh, and every time a guest comes from abroad I drag them to an Indonesian restaurant and they never want to leave. But there is something of a lack of selection. All the sandwiches are cheese, all the fish is salmon. And the supermarkets are the same size as the local post office. As an American who is used to megamarts where you’re barely able to see the end of an aisle and can choose from more than 250 different boxes of breakfast cereal, this can come as something of a shock. But then, here’s what I love more: walking down my block and buying cheese at the kaaserie, a fresh slab of salmon from the fish shop, fruit from the Turkish market and then going across the street and picking up my shoes from the cobbler. These daily excursions and little local communities are unheard of in my sprawling, car-obsessed homeland.

In sum, I laughed, I cried, I got down on my knees and thanked my stars I live here in this unique and wonderful country.

Quite interesting

For this former Dutch national there were lots of changes. Especially in how the Dutch society has become more weary about the goings on. To me the fuss about Zwarte Piet, a traditional and fantasy character is amazing. I never saw him as a lowly slave but an assistant who happened to be a Moor.
The drug scene seems to be out of control, which I have noted on my yearly trips back to the country.
Also tolerance of different nationalities and religions is no longer.
I belief this book is accurate enough to get a real feel of what the country is today.

A Very Challenging Combination of Linear Algebra and Multivariate Calculus

At the University of Georgia this book is used for a two semester honors course that combines linear algebra and multivariate calculus (MATH 3500 and MATH 3510) and is generally taught by Dr. Shifrin himself. The idea is to show students how the two subjects are fundamentally related while at the same time giving rigorous proofs of the underpinnings of vector calculus and linear algebra. I would say that about 80% of the work in this text is proof related, so if you're one who normally struggles with theory and proofs this is definitely not the book for you.

While Dr. Shifrin can be a bit dry with his explanations at times I can guarantee you that students will learn a lot by putting forth the effort. Again, for those of you who are not familiar with Shifrin's books or style of writing I would not recommend this book to any beginner of linear algebra and/or multivariate calculus. This book is best served for students who feel comfortable proving theorems and being able to justify their work. Nonetheless, if you're up for a good challenge I would highly recommend this book because the exercises will definitely make you think.

In conclusion, I think one of the most rewarding aspects of this book is the appreciation of linear algebra/vector calculus that one will have after having labored through the chapters. This is very nice book that produces a very complete coverage of the material. Why give it only 2 stars? Easy. The material is not so advanced that it is worth the ridiculous price. Hubbard and Hubbard is more cost-effective (you save $40) and has a lot more material. Alternately you can purchase Borden and Shilov from Dover together and save $125.

Beautiful but Wordy

This book is probably best for young students who have a large amount of time on their hands.
There are some parts about it I love---such as the effort to give an intuitive explanation of every concept, the attention given to creativity, problems, typesetting, and diagrams; and there are some things I hate---the fact that sometimes the book tries too hard to explain and just ends up obfuscating the concept; the weaving, self-conscious prose; and the fact that sometimes more subtlety is better, which the text occasionally seems to forget.

If you are mature enough, I think you can probably learn the content here well from a more terse presentation.
And if you are immature, a more terse presentation might be a quicker way for you to grow up.
But in all, I can't hate this text for the sake of its effort to really make students understand the interplay and rigorous nature of mathematics.

Two books which are similar to this one are
(1) Advanced Calculus of Several Variables by CH Edwards, which I prefer and highly recommend (readable yet compact)
(2) Hubbard and Hubbard's Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms. I do not have experience with this, but have heard rave reviews. In my opinion, at 800 pages, it is probably a sprawling summary of all undergraduate mathematics, with some ingenious insights.

About the Author
Don Tapping has worked for over twenty years to eliminate waste and improve bottom-line results in the telecommunications, medical, automotive, industrial, and aerospace industries. Tapping directed the lean implementation for Eaton Aerospace Division for over 5 years, with similar duties prior to that at Schlumberger Technologies, UNISTRUT Corporation, and Data Scan Services.

Tom Shuker has over thirty years’ experience in manufacturing and is currently President of Lean Concepts, LLC. Shuker recently participated in lean implementation within General Motors Corporation including two years at New United Motors Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), a joint GM-Toyota Assembly Plant. He has also consulted for other manufacturers in the implementation of their lean manufacturing systems including Herman Miller, Autocam, Merilatt, Medtronics, Caterpillar, and Aeroquip Corporation–Division of Eaton.

Thorough review of VSM in the office

Ok, don't buy this book as a general "lean office" book - it's not that. It's ALL about mapping a value stream, running projects based on the value stream, and using VSM as the management tool for a lean office. I like that, but I felt that this book spends far too much time focused on the one tool, and doesn't emphasize that it's one tool that is part of an overall management system that will just require more.

Pros:
- Excellent, thorough, breakdown of VSM in the office
- Focused entirely on an office/service environment. It's not a retread with "manufacturing" replaced with "service" like some books.
- Visual, with excellent pictures and examples throughout

Cons:
- Only emphasizes one tool
- The wastes discussion was weak compared to other office books - I found several others to cover them much more thoroughly, with better examples.

What a welcome addition to the world of lean!

This book is such a welcome addition to my book shelf. I tried so hard last year to try to translate manufacturing value stream mapping to the transactional world and found it very difficult. This book simplifies the approach incredibly. There are some typos in the book as well as one figure that is missing some icons. The bad part about the book is that it does seem to spend a lot of time saying the same thing over and over and over again while skipping over some very important VSM concepts like dealing with multiple flows, etc. You need to have a good background in VSM and lean in order to absorb this book easily. I appreciate the fact though that the authors try to demonstrate the tools on three or four examples throughout the book, but why not put in a few other case studies all the way through???!!! I hate having just one complete case study like in the book Learning to See. Not all situations are the same so having several examples can be very helpful.

VSM for the Office

I found this to be a good book on translating the tools of manufacturing to an office environment. It communicates all of the basics that are required.

I've attended one of this consulting group's manufacturing classes. I found them to be dead on. I like the way they handled the accounting/cost/metric relationship to lean production. Basically, the current accounting standards will cause you to do things in opposition to what lean principles will have you do.

In some other office scenarios, I think this more traditional approach will not have all the pieces or tools required. I work in an industry where order entry is significantly more complex than the examples presented, a much higher degree of interaction with other players is required, and rework loops are significant part of the process (customer driven rework). ANITECH has an approach that tracks the information flow surrounding the work process, while applying the same lean techniques that are presented in this book.

Tracking the information flow provides an opportunity to sort out, automate, and lean out that information flow. There is tremendous leverage in this concept.
