The best human nervous system text for students.

When I was a medical student in the 1960s, one of my favorite books was Neurological Anatomy by Alf Brodal. Alf's son Per has progressively updated the earlier work and the fourth edition is the best yet. The text is authoritative and up-to-date but easy to read. It is comprehensive but never over-complicated. In my opinion it it is the most accessible reference on the anatomy of the human brain. However, it is not a research oriented book like the the Paxinos and Mai edited text - it seems to me more aimed at high level undergraduate students or practicing physicians. It is a pleasure to read a book that has a single author, who happens also to be a very clear writer. In my opinion, he has taken all the best features of the original Alf Brodal book and rewritten them for a 21st century audience.
The only concern I have in regard to this book is the declining state of undergraduate neuroanatomy. I do not know of many undergraduate courses that would match up to a book with this much detail.

Great book for Intro Neuro students

The Central Nervous System provides an excellent overview of the systems and functions of the CNS. From very detailed neuroanatomical structures, to complex processes involved with all types of functionality, this book presents a superb introduction for any young neuroscience student.
Within the first section, all chapters are devoted to building the brain from the neuron forward. Beginning with basic anatomy and types of cells, the section progresses through the complex processes involved in creating synapses, sending messages through neurons, and the plasticity of neuronal connections. These chapters lay the groundwork for the subsequent chapters and sections by describing in detail the building blocks of the CNS; neurons. The section ends by describing some of the largest parts and systems of the CNS, such as the spinal cord, brain stem, and the flow of blood through the arterial and venous systems.
Section 2 follows with the development of the CNS, from before birth, through adulthood. Per Brodal provides interesting examples of types of dysfunction, disorders, and damage than can occur during any of the developmental stages and how that affects neuronal development and outcome. The section ends with a positive feeling message about how damages from aging or even catastrophic damage in early childhood can be partially mended through plasticity. Section 3 overviews how sensory information of all types is converted through the CNS into neuronal reactions. By covering the 5 senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch), they set up a framework for the following section dealing with motor systems. In particular, the chapter devoted to systems, features, and treatments associated with pain are extremely interesting.
Section 4 which covers the motor system and movements, begins by explaining how the motor system works interdependently with others systems, a seamless transition from the previous section describing the process of sensory input. By beginning with functions of motoneurons, muscles, and reflexes, the section sets up the sequential transition between peripheral systems, pathways of the motor system, and finally to the brain structures responsible for processing information into actions. The section flows through these chapters covering the spinal pathways, the basal ganglia, the cerebellum, and ending with the functions of these regions in eye movements. Diseases that affect these regions and function are also described and related to real people, which makes the reader feel that the knowledge is more tangible and applicable to their world.
Section 5 includes detailed descriptions of the cranial nerves, which again has a flawless transition from brain regions controlling eye movement from the previous section to functions of reticular formation, consciousness, sleep, and the functioning processes of the cranial nerves. Sections 6, 7, and 8 cover the autonomic nervous system, limbic structures, and the cerebral cortex respectively. As very complicated structures and functions, this introductory text provides general organization, anatomical features, and principal functionality of each of the systems. For example, Section 6 describes the neurotransmitters involved in the autonomic nervous system as well as the structure, function, and connections associated wit the hypothalamus and endocrine system. Section 7 describes how the amygdala, basal forebrain, and hippocampus form functional roles in regulating emotions, memories, and aspects of learning. Section 8, the final section and endpoint of our journey through the CNS, sums together the knowledge about each section through the nervous system into the general and more complete functionality of our brain. Here, the organization and connections of the cerebral cortex are outlined and the functions of each are discussed. Additionally, they discuss aspects of functional differences between the hemispheres, such as speech and language areas, as well as sex differences found between men and women when investigating the structure of the cerebral cortex.
Overall this book is well written and easy to read, keeping the attention of readers with interesting examples spread throughout the text of disorders and how they affect functioning. By starting with the basic descriptions of the neuron, moving through all subsequent systems, and eventually discussing how all these working parts come together to build a conscious being with innumerable abilities, Per Brodal has created a Central Nervous System journey, through which a student can easily read and learn while enjoying the ride.

Great introduction for the Central Nervous System

The Central Nervous System compiles the principles of brain structures in a basic, clear, and concrete way. While making the text easy to read and easy to understand, the author does not compromise content.
In this fourth edition, the book covers a wide range of explanations of neurobiology, including psychological and clinical research and the structure of the peripheral pathways. One of the main goals of the book is to generate knowledge by being more intelligible rather than to overload the reader with descriptive facts that would require more memorization.
The book divides its 34 chapters in 8 sections. Each part has an overview that contains general information about what is to come; since the beginning engages the reader explaining from a general point of view the principles of the nervous system (i.e. the neuron and their processes). Then, it takes the lector by hand to the next's chapters, including the description of synaptic function and also development of structural and functional features that differentiate cells. The book provides an explanation of the different pathways formed in the nervous system and describes rewiring process of structure and function in plasticity. Throughout the chapters, the brain structures are related with associated diseases. That provides clarity, helping the reader to make clinical relationships with different brain structures and behavior. It covers aging, the basic properties of sensory receptors (including pain and clinical disturbances of the somatosensory system). For the sake of completeness the next chapters cover the hypothalamus, cranial nerves, the autonomic nervous system and the cerebral cortex.
The photos, images and drawings presented in the book are descriptive and clear; they are very helpful supporting the information that is presented in text.
This volume is a basic resource for professionals interesting in the nervous system; for neuroscience students, psychiatrist as well as clinicians.
The text can be used as a tool for studying and understanding the basic principles of the nervous system. It surprises me the amount of subjects that the book covers; all subjects are explained in a friendly way that even professionals with not medical background can understand and get involved with. One of my favorite characteristics of the book is that there seems to be a flow between chapters that makes information more clear and precise from the beginning to the end. This work is an excellent resource for learning the marvels of the central nervous system and for preparing the reader with the principles needed for further studies. It seeds solid concepts and fosters curiosity.
