Real Ways To Manage Your Time
By Victoria R. Glerum
We all know that time in the 21st century has become a precious commodity, and figuring out how to manage it effectively is a challenge faced by anybody involved in the academic, professional and social spheres of today's frenzied society. Time management techniques are tackled by teachers, authors, and doctors worldwide, but nowhere are they presented in a fashion as realistic, practical, detailed, and well-laid out as in Dr. Jan Yager's book entitled WORK LESS, DO MORE: THE 14-DAY PRODUCTIVITY MAKEOVER. In a text filled with anecdotes, professional advice, and even etymology, Dr. Yager takes readers through a 14-day schedule with each day covering different topics related to time management. Her chapters cover actions such as planning, organizing, networking, and running effective meetings, technological duties such as phone calls and emails, as well as relationships both in and out of the workplace. Dr. Yager speaks to those of all professions, all financial levels, and all personalities.
In her introduction, Dr. Yager immediately engages the reader with thought-provoking questions about time and provides exercises and quizzes to keep the reader active and involved. She then proceeds to address each day and topic with precision and thoroughness, quoting real people with thoughtful advice as well as providing her own tips and techniques. Her prototype for To-Do Lists, logs, and planning sheets are there and ready to be filled out. Her "Beat the Clock" sections at the end of every day provide a good summary of the section, jump starting readers to begin their time management makeover. The ACTION! Plan is straightforward and very useful. Dr. Yager even tells us it is ok to procrastinate, as long as we do it creatively.
WORK LESS, DO MORE is engaging, educational, and filled to the brim with tips for anyone who questions, even in the slightest, their ways of approaching time. The book reflects extensive research, painstaking attention to detail, and a true understanding of the way effective time management can really be applied to all aspects of peoples' own personal lives and relationships with others. Dr. Yager's words are timely in their references to technology and current-day trends. Everything she says about productivity, success, and happiness is believable and inspirational, not overly idealistic or clich. WORK LESS, DO MORE is a new spin on a widely pursued topic, a fine piece of non-fiction writing, and a valuable resource for those who take the time to read its words, take to heart its advice, and put in to practice its techniques.

Supremely Practical
By Rod Harrington
Over the years, I have benefited a lot from productivity books, organization books, time management books. Each of them contained a few helpful techniques I was able to put into practice. Here's a volume, though, that is quite different. It's a workbook: it's made to mark-up and write in. It includes the whole range of things an efficient manager or any self-motivated worker should be doing. And it covers it all in a workable, down-to-earth, very readable fashion.

It's not just a book to read. It is a big (200+ pages) compendium of ideas, lists, quizzes, worksheets--a whole collection of absolutely practical material! And because it's just out, all its suggestions for using technology are right up-to-date. How to best handle the mountains of e-mail, how to make the phone your helper and not your enemy, strategies for backing-up your data--all these are covered in great fashion.

Need help with goal setting? Go to Day 2. Need to simplify your piles of paperwork? Check out Day 7. Having trouble with interruptions? That's in Day 10. Mired down with meetings? Day 13. Wondering if you could ever possibly get some balance in your life? It's Day 14.

This is anything but some boring textbook. It's a great read! It's interesting and supremely practical. If you want to stop wasting your time (and others' time, too), here's the one book to get. You'll be less stressed and way more productive.

Provides instant results
By Wayne Botha
This book will save you time, right off the bat. I answer over 100 emails a day as a Project Manager on multi-million dollar projects. Page 54 alone is the worth the price of this book. Now I know how to categorize emails and respond appropriately depending on who sent the email.

I like the structure of this book. One chapter per day is bite sized chunks that readers can absorb and apply, one day at a time. (We are busy people which is why we are looking to learn how to work less and do more).

Jan has packed the book with logs and worksheets placed throughout the book to keep it interactive, with permission to photocopy the worksheets for personal use.

I agree that Self-esteem is the key factor in Time Management that is rarely addressed as Jan quotes on page 38. I would have liked to see more discussion on how to improve self-esteem, or at least a reference to a good book on improving self-esteem, as this is a key factor.

I would also like to have seen more focus on how to deal with the volume of meetings that Professionals deal with today. No-one in my office has a paper-based calendar like professionals had ten years ago. We have 6 hours of virtual meetings a day, mostly with team mates in other states and countries. Meetings are scheduled days and hours in advance. As such, it is not possible to see your meetings for the week, when you walk into the office on Monday morning. I would have like to have tips on the best ways to prioritize and attend meetings, beyond the appointment book on Page 76. Today's workplace is far more dynamic than a week-at-a-time calendar.

Page 50 has a nice tip on how to get motivated, that I have not seen before.

Overall, this is a wonderful book, jam-packed with tips and for employees, self-employed professionals and even students. Jan goes far beyond the simple "to-do" lists and her tips help all readers to prioritize better, make better decisions on where to invest time, so that we can have more time to do what is truly important to us.

I highly recommend this book and it has a special place on my bookshelf, so that I can reread it should my time get out of balance again.

A MARVELOUS COLLECTION OF WRITINGS FROM THE EARLY WOMEN’S MOVEMENT
By Steven H Propp
This 1970 anthology of writings is perhaps the best single collection of writings from the early days of the “Second Wave” women’s movement. Editor Robin Morgan stated in her Introduction, “This book… was conceived, written, edited, copy-edited, proofread, designed, and illustrated by women… During the year that it took to collectively create this anthology, we women involved had to face specific and very concrete examples of our oppression, with regard to the book itself… Because of the growing consciousness of women’s liberation, and, in some cases, because of articles that women wrote for the book, there were not a few ‘reprisals’: five personal relationships were severed, two couples were divorced and one separated, one woman was forced to withdraw her article by the man she lived with; another’s husband kept rewriting the piece until it was unrecognizable as her own… the deadline kept being pushed further ahead, because the authors had so many other pressures on them---from housework to child care to jobs… We were also delayed by … three pregnancies, one miscarriage, and one birth---plus one abortion and one hysterectomy. Speaking from my own experience… during the past year I twice survived the almost-dissolution of my marriage, was fired from my job (for trying to organize a union and for being in women’s liberation), gave birth to a child, worked on a women’s newspaper, marched and picketed, breast-fed the baby, was arrested on a militant women’s liberation action, spent time in jail, stopped wearing makeup and shaving my legs, started learning Karate, and changed my politics completely. That is, I became, somewhere along the way, a feminist’ committed to a Women’s Revolution.”

The anthology includes essays/articles on Women in Medicine; Women in the Military; Women in Journalism; Women and the Welfare System; Women in Factories; Women in the Catholic Church (by Mary Daly, author of The Church and the Second Sex; Madison Avenue Brainwashing; Birth Control; “Notes of a radical Lesbian”; Sexual Politics (in Literature); “To Be Black and Female”; “The Mexican-American Woman”; “The Politics of Housework”; Self-Defense; etc. It also includes poetry, as well as various historically important documents (e.g., the NOW Bill of Rights; the Redstockings Manifesto; WITCH documents, etc.). Authors include Naomi Weisstein; Mary Jane Sherfey; Kate Millett; Marge Piercy; Florynce Kennedy; Rita Mae Brown; Sylvia Plath; Valerie Solanas (her famous ‘SCUM Manifesto’), and many others.

To give you a brief sample of what is contained herein, Judith Ann’s essay, “The Secretarial Proletariat” states, “This is … one of the most oppressive aspects of female clerical work; since the working conditions were so bad and our daily life so dull, the only bright spots in our lives were our relationships or hoped-for relationships with men. We sought refuge from our oppression as working women in the male supremacist institutions of dating and marriage, and in escapist consumerism of make-up and pretty clothes.” (Pg. 90)

Lucinda Cisler’s article on birth control notes, “It is curious that many Catholic women seek to be sterilized, although, like other good birth-control methods, the procedure is contrary to Church teachings. Perhaps this is because it is easier to confess one single, final big sin than to keep appearing in the confessional week after week saying, ‘Father, I sinned seven times: I took my pills.’” (Pg. 257)

Gene Damon’s essay “The Least of These” includes the statement, “Many years ago, in an issue of ‘The Ladder,’ a reader wrote to the effect that the only thing holding back the civil-rights movement of Lesbians was the many couples living alone together in ‘egoism deux.’ Very sadly, it is as true today as it was then. We seldom march, seldom picket, but frequently do run away… to our shame, I might add. But a good look at our group condition, to some extent, explains this.” (Pg. 300)

Don’t expect a MODERN collection of writings; these essays were written from 45-50 years ago. But as a comprehensive collection of writings from this crucial early period, it can hardly be bettered.

From Publishers Weekly
With a couple of platinum-selling "neo-soul" records to her name, Scott doesn't have much to prove, but offers this cull from a parallel life—the poetry she's written on and off, with varying degrees of public exposure, since middle school—in the hopes that poets everywhere will "continue to insight, ignite, and recite this blessed, raunchy, wild ride of a craft." The book reads like an ecstatic but disciplined panoply of influence and inspiration. Love poems, break-up poems, short-of-money poems, weariness poems, Christian poems, celebratory poems: all have an immediacy and short-lined honesty that reflects a deep appreciation of everyone from Nikki Giovanni to Emily Dickinson (just two of the poets mentioned in Scott's introduction). Better than the average coffeehouse fare, the poems probably would not have seen print without the records. That won't bother fans, and it shouldn't bother readers who come upon them not knowing who Scott is, and enjoy the poems anyway. (June)

Soul speak by Jill Scott
By LeRoux
Oh my goodness!!!! This book of poetry is soul stirring and speaks to sisters of every hue and age. But especially as a black woman with a kinship to Jill's life, this book of poetry is awesome and feels like she is speaking my story. In the foreward Jill recounts how when she was a young girl and discovered the poetry of Nikki Giovanni she felt that Nikki's poetry was speaking directly to her. That is EXACTLY the way I feel when I read Jill's poetry. Raw, emotional, soft, loud, erotic, historic and powerful...only a few words that barely describe the beautiful array of feelings and senses and phases of life that her words evoke. GET THIS BOOK. Whether or not you are a lover of modern poetry, one read and you will become a lifetime fan of this woman. Jill Scott is the truth.

Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World, by Tim Marshall

In the bestselling tradition of Why Nations Fail and The Revenge of Geography, an award-winning journalist uses ten maps of crucial regions to explain the geo-political strategies of the world powers.

All leaders of nations are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas, and concrete. To understand world events, news organizations and other authorities often focus on people, ideas, and political movements, but without geography, we never have the full picture. Now, in the relevant and timely Prisoners of Geography, seasoned journalist Tim Marshall examines Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan and Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic—their weather, seas, mountains, rivers, deserts, and borders—to provide a context often missing from our political reportage: how the physical characteristics of these countries affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders.

In ten, up-to-date maps of each region, Marshall explains in clear and engaging prose the complex geo-political strategies of these key parts of the globe. What does it mean that Russia must have a navy, but also has frozen ports six months a year? How does this affect Putin’s treatment of the Ukraine? How is China’s future constrained by its geography? Why will Europe never be united? Why will America never be invaded? Shining a light on the unavoidable physical realities that shape all of our aspirations and endeavors, Prisoners of Geography is the critical guide to one of the major (and most often overlooked) determining factors in world history.

Review
"[Q]uite simply, one of the best books about geopolitics you could imagine: reading it is like having a light shone on your understanding." (The Evening Standard)

"In an ever more complex, chaotic and interlinked world, Prisoners of Geography is a concise and useful primer on geopolitics.” (Newsweek)

"Marshall is excellent on some of the highways and byways of geo-politics." (Financial Times)

"Fans of geography, history and politics (and maps) will be enthralled." (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

"This is not a book about environmental determinism – the geography of a region is never presented as fatalistic; but it does send a timely reminder that despite technological advances, geography is always there, often forcing the hand of world leaders." (Geographical Magazine)

"Lively and perceptive political and historical analyses are frequent. The chapter on China is excellent; the chapter on Africa combines geography and history in a convincing way; the chapter on Western Europe...is a brilliant narrative of European relations, particularly between France and Germany. The superb chapter on the Middle East makes for a clear indictment of the Sykes–Picot agreements and of their tracing of artificial borders. The chapter on the Arctic is precise and informative ...A very lively, sensible and informative series of country reports in which geography occupies its rightful place along with shrewd historical reminders and political judgments." (Survival: Global Politics and Strategy)

"Marshall's insistence on seeing the world through the lens of geography compels a fresh way of looking at maps—not just as objects for orientation or works of art, but as guideposts to the often thorny relations between nations.” (New York Times Book Review)

"This book is especially timely...Landscapes, rugged or otherwise, and what the land holds in resources, exert their own kind of sway that no one, not even a Putin, can surmount. This book grabbed me because of its enormous relevance to our world today." (Booktrib.com)

“A convincing analysis of Russian geopoliticalthinking....Also makes clear the terrible price the world has had to paybecause European officials decided to create nation-states with borders thatcompletely ignored cultural geography.” (Washington Post)

Prisoners of Geography INTRODUCTION
Vladimir Putin says he is a religious man, a great supporter of the Russian Orthodox Church. If so, he may well go to bed each night, say his prayers, and ask God: “Why didn’t you put some mountains in Ukraine?”

If God had built mountains in Ukraine, then the great expanse of flatland that is the North European Plain would not be such encouraging territory from which to attack Russia repeatedly. As it is, Putin has no choice: he must at least attempt to control the flatlands to the west. So it is with all nations, big or small. The landscape imprisons their leaders, giving them fewer choices and less room to maneuver than you might think. This was true of the Athenian Empire, the Persians, the Babylonians, and before; it was true of every leader seeking high ground from which to protect their tribe.

The land on which we live has always shaped us. It has shaped the wars, the power, politics, and social development of the peoples that now inhabit nearly every part of the earth. Technology may seem to overcome the distances between us in both mental and physical space, but it is easy to forget that the land where we live, work, and raise our children is hugely important and that the choices of those who lead the seven billion inhabitants of this planet will to some degree always be shaped by the rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, and seas that constrain us all—as they always have.

Overall there is no one geographical factor that is more important than any other. Mountains are no more important than deserts, nor rivers than jungles. In different parts of the planet different geographical features are among the dominant factors in determining what people can and cannot do.

Broadly speaking, geopolitics looks at the ways in which international affairs can be understood through geographical factors: not just the physical landscape—the natural barriers of mountains or connections of river networks, for example—but also climate, demographics, cultural regions, and access to natural resources. Factors such as these can have an important impact on many different aspects of our civilization, from political and military strategy to human social development, including language, trade, and religion.

The physical realities that underpin national and international politics are too often disregarded in both writing about history and in contemporary reporting of world affairs. Geography is clearly a fundamental part of the “why” as well as the “what.” Take, for example, China and India: two massive countries with huge populations that share a very long border but are not politically or culturally aligned. It wouldn’t be surprising if these two giants had fought each other in several wars, but in fact, apart from one monthlong battle in 1962, they never have. Why? Because between them is the highest mountain range in the world, and it is practically impossible to advance large military columns through or over the Himalayas. As technology becomes more sophisticated, of course, ways are emerging of overcoming this obstacle, but the physical barrier remains a deterrent, and so both countries focus their foreign policy on other regions, while keeping a wary eye on each other.

Individual leaders, ideas, technology, and other factors all play a role in shaping events, but they are temporary. Each new generation will still face the physical obstructions created by the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas, the challenges created by the rainy season, and the disadvantages of limited access to natural minerals or food sources.

I first became interested in this subject when covering the wars in the Balkans in the 1990s. I watched close at hand as the leaders of various peoples, be they Serbian, Croat, or Bosniak, deliberately reminded their “tribes” of the ancient divisions and, yes, ancient suspicions in a region crowded with diversity. Once they had pulled the peoples apart, it didn’t take much to then push them against each other.

The River Ibar in Kosovo is a prime example. Ottoman rule over Serbia was cemented by the Battle of Kosovo Polje in 1389, fought near where the Ibar flows through the city of Mitrovica. Over the following centuries the Serb population began to withdraw behind the Ibar as Muslim Albanians gradually descended from the mountainous Malesija region into Kosovo, where they became a majority by the mid-eighteenth century. Fast-forward to the twentieth century and there was still a clear ethnic-religious division roughly marked by the river. Then in 1999, battered by NATO from the air and the Kosovo Liberation Army on the ground, the Yugoslav (Serbian) military retreated across the Ibar, quickly followed by most of the remaining Serb population. The river became the de facto border of what some countries now recognize as the independent state of Kosovo.

Mitrovica was also where the advancing NATO ground forces came to a halt. During the three-month war, there had been veiled threats that NATO intended to invade all of Serbia. In truth, the restraints of both geography and politics meant the NATO leaders never really had that option. Hungary had made it clear that it would not allow an invasion from its territory, as it feared reprisals against the 350,000 ethnic Hungarians in northern Serbia. The alternative was an invasion from the south, which would have gotten them to the Ibar in double-quick time; but NATO would then have faced the mountains above them.

I was working with a team of Serbs in Belgrade at the time and asked what would happen if NATO came: “We will put our cameras down, Tim, and pick up guns” was the response. They were liberal Serbs, good friends of mine and opposed to their government, but they still pulled out the maps and showed me where the Serbs would defend their territory in the mountains, and where NATO would grind to a halt. It was some relief to be given a geography lesson in why NATO’s choices were more limited than the Brussels PR machine made public.

An understanding of how crucial the physical landscape was in reporting news in the Balkans stood me in good stead in the years that followed. For example, in 2001, a few weeks after 9/11, I saw a demonstration of how, even with today’s modern technology, climate still dictates the military possibilities of even the world’s most powerful armies. I was in northern Afghanistan, having crossed the border river from Tajikistan on a raft, in order to link up with the Northern Alliance (NA) troops who were fighting the Taliban.

The American fighter jets and bombers were already overhead, pounding Taliban and al-Qaeda positions on the cold, dusty plains and hills east of Mazar-e-Sharif in order to pave the way for the advance on Kabul. After a few weeks it was obvious that the NA were gearing up to move south. And then the world changed color.

The most intense sandstorm I have ever experienced blew in, turning everything a mustard-yellow color. At the height of the storm you couldn’t see more than a few yards ahead of you, and the only thing clear was that the Americans’ satellite technology, at the cutting edge of science, was helpless, blind in the face of the climate of this wild land. Everyone, from President Bush and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to the NA troops on the ground, just had to wait. Then it rained and the sand that had settled on everything turned into mud. The rain came down so hard that the baked-mud huts we were living in looked as if they were melting. Again it was clear that the move south was on hold until geography finished having its say. The rules of geography, which Hannibal, Sun Tzu, and Alexander the Great all knew, still apply to today’s leaders.

More recently, in 2012, I was given another lesson in geostrategy: As Syria descended into full-blown civil war, I was standing on a Syrian hilltop overlooking a valley south of the city of Hama and saw a hamlet burning in the distance. Syrian friends pointed out a much larger village about a mile away, from where they said the attack had come. They then explained that if one side could push enough people from the other faction out of the valley, then the valley could be joined onto other land that led to the country’s only motorway, and as such would be useful in carving out a piece of contiguous, viable territory that one day could be used to create a mini-statelet if Syria could not be put back together again. Where before I saw only a burning hamlet, I could now see its strategic importance and understand how political realities are shaped by the most basic physical realities.

Geopolitics affects every country, whether at war, as in the examples above, or at peace. There will be instances in every region you can name. In these pages I cannot explore each one: Canada, Australia, and Indonesia, among others, get no more than a brief mention, although a whole book could be devoted to Australia alone and the ways in which its geography has shaped its connections with other parts of the world, both physically and culturally. Instead I have focused on the powers and regions that best illustrate the key points of the book, covering the legacy of geopolitics from the past (nation-forming); the most pressing situations we face today (the troubles in Ukraine, the expanding influence of China); and looking to the future (growing competition in the Arctic).

In Russia we see the influence of the Arctic, and how it limits Russia’s ability to be a truly global power. In China we see the limitations of power without a global navy. The chapter on the United States illustrates how shrewd decisions to expand its territory in key regions allowed it to achieve its modern destiny as a two-ocean superpower. Europe shows us the value of flatland and navigable rivers in connecting regions and producing a culture able to kick-start the modern world, while Africa is a prime example of the effects of isolation.

The chapter on the Middle East demonstrates why drawing lines on maps while disregarding the topography and, equally important, the geographical cultures in a given area is a recipe for trouble. We will continue to witness that trouble this century. The same theme surfaces in the chapters on Africa and India/Pakistan. The colonial powers used ink to draw lines that bore no relation to the physical realities of the region, and created some of the most artificial borders the world has seen. In the Middle East, an attempt is now being made to redraw them in blood.

Very different from the examples of Kosovo or Syria are Japan and Korea, in that they are mostly ethnically homogenous. But they have other problems: Japan is an island nation devoid of natural resources, while the division of the Koreas is a problem still waiting to be solved. Meanwhile, Latin America is an anomaly. In its far south it is so cut off from the outside world that global trading is difficult, and its internal geography is a barrier to creating a trading bloc as successful as the EU.

Finally, we come to one of the most uninhabitable places on earth—the Arctic. For most of history, humans have ignored it, but in the twentieth century we found energy there, and twenty-first-century diplomacy will determine who owns—and sells—that resource.

Seeing geography as a decisive factor in the course of human history can be construed as a bleak view of the world, which is why it is disliked in some intellectual circles. It suggests that nature is more powerful than man and that we can go only so far in determining our own fate. However, other factors clearly have an influence on events, too. Any sensible person can see that technology is now bending the iron rules of geography. It has found ways over, under, or through some of the barriers. The Americans can now fly a plane all the way from Missouri to Mosul on a bombing mission without needing to land to refuel. That, along with their great aircraft carrier battle groups, means they no longer absolutely have to have an ally or a colony in order to extend their global reach around the world. Of course, if they do have an air base on the island of Diego Garcia, or permanent access to the port in Bahrain, then they have more options; but it is less essential.

So airpower has changed the rules, as, in a different way, has the Internet. But geography, and the history of how nations have established themselves within that geography, remains crucial to our understanding of the world today and to our future.

The conflict in Iraq and Syria is rooted in colonial powers ignoring the rules of geography, whereas the Chinese occupation of Tibet is rooted in obeying them. America’s global foreign policy is dictated by them, and even the power projection of the last superpower standing can only mitigate the rules that nature, or God, handed down.

What are those rules? The place to begin is in the land where power is hard to defend, and so for centuries its leaders have compensated by pushing outward. It is the land without mountains to its west: Russia.

The author sets out with a big challenge ahead of him, namely to explain the geo-political strategies of the world powers with ten maps.

Geography cannot be changed. Political boundaries can be, usually with the aid of the army. Some political groupings may be formed by more peaceable means. Often peace is threatened by geography, however, a small strip of land or sea can be a tinderbox between nations.

In this interesting book, the author looks at Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Japan and Korea, and Greenland and the Arctic and considers how their physical geography can affect their strengths and vulnerabilities and the decisions made by their leaders. All of this is achieved in a fairly neutral tone that seeks to look at the facts, rather than pushing a particular line or agenda, delivering surprising analysis at times. Sometimes we do not know the world as well as we think we might.

Many questions are asked. Some deep and meaningful, others more abstract yet interesting nonetheless. This is one of those books that you probably don’t go out looking for, but should you stumble across it or receive it as a gift you will be very happy with it. Geography, politics and elements of the news cycle can be brought to life with this book. You just need an open mind.

Christmas is coming. This could be an ideal book for the curious reader. You might need two copies though, as if you start leafing through it there’s a big danger you will be hooked.

How geography explains much of what happens on Planet Earth
By James Denny
Using physical geography with a bit of climatology thrown in, author Tim Marshall explains Planet Earth's geo-politics in a refreshing and stimulating way. His structure is to lay out ten maps of continents and countries and to delve into the specifics of oceans, rivers, mountains, deserts and climate to explain how some countries have expanded greatly (Russia), others not at all (Korea) and why certain places in the world lend themselves to strife and conflict, while others lead to greater economic opportunity, cooperation, trade and stability.

"Prisoners of Geography" is a bold work. Some readers may think that Marshall's approach is reductionist in a 19th century sort of way, that everything can be explained by geo-determinism. I found it quite the opposite. Marshall's analysis of Japan and Korea (one of his ten maps) and of India and Pakistan (another of the ten) explain how in these situations, two different nation-states and cultures butt-up against each other and unfortunately are stuck in a permanent dance pose that neither wants to be in.

His map of Africa with its current political boundaries resulted when six 19th century European colonial powers in the second "Great Game," arbitrarily drew lines on a map. A century later, the post-WWII drive to independence among these weak colonies resulted in several dozen new nation states most of which lack a well-defined cultural, linguistic and religious, as well as a primary tribal or ethnic identity. Most of these new African nations are destined to continue as weak nation-states for the immediate and foreseeable future, "prisoners of geography" as Marshall would say. They are highly vulnerable to being led by despotic leaders, African "Big Men" types who through force of persona, if not outright corruption and abuse somehow manage to stay in power to rule a disparate lot.

Marshall uses geography to explain why the United States is highly defensible while Russia despite its vast size is not. He explains why China's Han people have for centuries been dominating and absorbing minorities on their periphery. China's most recent effort to occupy and neutralize Tibet is but the latest chapter in a long history of occupation and take-over.

In other examples, Marshall explains why Iran is highly defensible as a state while neighboring Iraq is not.

Perhaps the map that came as the biggest surprise was Marshall's last map, his map of the Arctic. The Arctic region is one of the last great, uncharted and unoccupied areas on the planet. The Arctic lacks a coherent strategy for settlement, exploitation of resources, nautical travel and military defense. (Marshall explains that in contrast, the Antarctic has an abiding agreement in force for a number of decades making it available to a wide variety of nations, primarily for scientific research). The Arctic region, however, borders on five modern nation-states which have big differences in opinion as to how the region should be managed, "who owns what" and because of its strategic significance to many different nations and spheres of influence, is a region very much in play.

Delve into the world of geopolitics.
By Paul Tognetti
Wealth, Poverty and Politics: An International PerspectiveRecently, I read Thomas Sowell’s outstanding new book “Wealth, Poverty and Politics: An International Perspective” in which the author argues passionately and convincingly that it is geography and not the so-called evils of capitalism that accounts for much of the economic disparity in the world today. Thus, when I spotted Tim Marshall’s new book “Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World” I decided to take my investigation into this subject to a whole other level. This definitely proved to be time very well spent.

According to some in the media with a political ax to grind, we in the developed world are something akin to vultures swooping down intent on robbing third world nations of their wealth and natural resources. This is the constant drumbeat. Rarely do the reporters who cobble together these stories take the time to consider why these countries have been unable to mine or extract these assets themselves. What you will discover in this book is that it all too often boils down to impediments caused by geography. Economic development in Africa has been stymied for centuries by a number of factors such as a lack of deepwater harbors, rivers that are simply not navigable and tropical diseases. It is much the same story in Latin America where mountainous terrain, jungles and a lack of deep harbors restrain development. You will discover that save for certain geographic obstacles the nation of Brazil would already be an economic powerhouse.

Meanwhile, geography has implications for rich and powerful nations as well. Russian foreign policy is necessarily shaped by the fact that the country still lacks a warm water port. In the chapter on “The Middle East” we discover that many of these countries were arbitrarily created by Europeans drawing lines on maps of faraway places that they knew precious little about. The implications of these actions are far-reaching and continue to be felt many decades later.

For those who are sincerely interested in educating themselves about these monumentally important issues then “Prisoners of Geography: Ten Maps That Explain Everything About the World” would be an excellent place to start. I thought that the 10 regional maps presented at the beginning of each chapter were extremely helpful in understanding the issues being discussed by Tim Marshall and I found myself referring to them frequently. What a neat idea! This is a must read for those interested in economics, geography and foreign policy. Highly recommended!

Really enjoyed it!

I really did enjoy reading the follow up to bully me...i thought it was a great story to finish Shane and Kaine's story...my heart broke for Shane during this read though I had no doubt he would have Kaine back in his arms. I'm so glad there was a second book to bully me because so many books just end after the story and only give a short glimpse of what happens next in their lives...so it was nice to read this book and have it take place 10 years after Shane and kaines first story together. only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating was because after reading teachers pet and then reading make me I thought there were too many similarities between the 2 when it came to the characters being held hostage and relying on their captors...other then that I thought this read was great.

Wanted to like the book, but was disappointed. Expected Kaine's character to have been more mature in 10 years. Found it frustrating how she had no hesitation over tossing Shane aside, yet could freely overlook everything Camden did to her.

Artworld Prestige: Arguing Cultural Value, by Timothy Van Laar, Leonard Diepeveen

Why does the artworld often privilege one cultural form over another? Why does it grant more attention to reviews in, say, Artforum over ARTnews? And how can an artist once hailed as visionary be dismissed as derivative just a few years later? Exploring the ever-shifting estimations of value that make up the confluence of artists, critics, patrons, and gallery owners known as the artworld, Timothy van Laar and Leonard Diepeveen argue that prestige, a matter of socially constructed deference and conferral, plays an indispensable role in the attention and reception given to modern and contemporary art.

After an initial chapter that develops a theory of prestige and the poignancy of its loss, the book looks at how arguments of prestige function in systems of representation, various media, and art's relationship to affect. It considers twentieth-century artists who moved not away from, but toward figuration; looks at what is at stake in the recurrent argument about the death of painting; examines the decline and an apparent return of sensual pleasure as a central attribute of visual art; and concludes with a look at the peculiar function of prestige in outsider art.

Illustrated with artwork by David Park, Jorge Pardo, Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor, Cecily Brown, Howard Finster, and others, Artworld Prestige provides an engaging guide to the changes, debates, and shifts that animate aesthetic judgments.

Review

"In clear, lively prose, the authors have crafted an original and compelling field guide to the higher realms of contemporary art criticism and the way it confers or denies the halos of prestige. The vantage point they take enables them to illuminate some startling values, dogmas, and blind spots that lie hidden within familiar art world discourse."--Carol Duncan, author of Civilizing Rituals: Inside Public Art Museums

"In a series of nicely described case studies, the authors show how understanding prestige involves analyzing the most obdurate terms of modernism and postmodernism: self-awareness, relevance, theory, difficulty, irony, pleasure, seriousness, professionalism, the instability of meaning, and the refusal of sense. This will be a very helpful book for anyone struggling to understand how the artworld produces its unpredictable judgments."--James Elkins, author of What Painting Is

A major step forward in the institutional theory of art but stops short of the finish line
By John Armstrong
In this short but meaty book the authors make what I think is a real breakthrough in our understanding of value in art. They embrace the so-called institutional theory of art put forth most notably by philosophers George Dickie and Arthur Danto and take it from the world of axioms and thought experiments into the real world, which is to say the real NY-centered art world of the last fifty years. (They have little if any interest in the broader world in which the art world exists.)

They zero in on a central principle of the institutional theory of art, which is that the status of a work of art is not intrinsic to the work but is conferred by the artworld to which the work is presented. They look at how this conferral works - who does it, when, and how. They stress that the process is collaborative (more exactly negotiative, if there is such a word), and that it involves advocacy for and against the work that ends in some form of consensus. They allow that the consensus may not be complete, that it may involve ambivalence, and, most importantly, that it may be reversed at some later date, so that a work may lose the status it was originally granted, or gain status that was originally withheld from it.

They could have called the status conferred on a work (and occasionally withdrawn from it) simply value, but then they would have had to explain which of the various meanings of the word they did and did not intend in their usage of it. Instead, they choose a different word, prestige. Prestige is a primitive: we have an instinctive sense for it. It can be rationalized but doesn't have to be. The one intrinsic property it has is that it is desirable. And it's social - it's not merely something we want to have, it's something we want others to know we have. (A nice thing about prestige is that it's transitive. You can have prestige by having it conferred directly on you, you can have it by owning a work of art by an artist that has prestige, you can have it by knowing people who have prestige, and so on.) The term prestige as used by the authors names the exact thing in the artworld that everybody is aware of but nobody has found a really satisfactory way of talking about.

To my mind the model of negotiated and periodically renegotiated value, grounded in desire and social dynamics, is the real breakthrough of the book. The first chapter, in which the authors lay out the model, is compelling, even exciting. But their real interest is not in the core model but rather in the kind of intellectual discourse that it engenders. (This is actually called out in the full title of the book: Artworld Prestige: Arguing Cultural Value.) Their real interest is in the rhetoric - the words, the tropes, the argumentational tactics - employed by those who want to confer or withhold value/prestige in a given situation. The orientation of the book is thus primarily linguistic rather than sociological. (Or economic; they rarely talk about money or the "market".)

In the first chapter, as well as the following four (the last, though called a conclusion, introduces new material and is really a chapter in its own right), they consider a number of specific events which have caused people to argue about art.

The main large scale developments they look at include the end of Abstract Expressionism, the return (or returns) to figurative painting, the rise of stylistic pluralism, assaults on painting by Conceptualists and their kin (united under the cry of "painting is dead"), the rise of feminism and what some would call political correctness in art, attempts to bring pleasure (including beauty and "the aesthetic") back into art, and coming to terms with outsider art.

Examples of the specific events they examine are Greenberg's failed attempt to anoint Jules Olitski as "the best painter alive", Frank Gallo's fall from grace due to the belatedly perceived sexist nature of his work, the consternation caused by Phillip Guston's dramatic switch from abstract to figurative painting, Gerhard Richter's sustained parallel efforts in abstract and figurative styles, the difficulty of establishing a permanent place for American and German Neo-Expressionists, the eternally precarious status of David Hockney, and more (though not much for the considerations of pleasure and outsider art).

The authors present the specific incidents not merely as things that happened but as things that people pronounced on as they happened, whether expressing approval or disapproval. They quote contemporary writings (mostly formal writings but also some interviews) on both sides, and note the ways the participants argue their positions.

I am honestly not sure how much new there is in their analyses. A lot of it is standard rhetoric. Some points that I gleaned are:

* The standard term of praise for art is "serious". It indicates the artist knows what they are doing, that they have a purpose, that the work they are making serves that purpose. Importantly, seriousness is not tied to any particular theory or grand narrative of art.

* The artworld has an elite that you want to connect yourself to. The key characteristic of that elite is professionalism, meaning educated, possessed of specific knowledge (especially of art theory and art history), intelligent, and able to assess seriousness.

* If you are arguing a majority (status quo) position, be calm and hold to the high road. If you are arguing a minority (non-status quo) position, go for a dramatic strike that reduces your opponents' position to nothing (as "painting is dead!")

* Avoid presenting the art you are promoting as being purely what it is. Represent it as being "about" something, or "quoting" something, or, at the very least, as being ironic.

I'm caricaturing to some degree, but these really are the kinds of things they talk about.

This is a good book, definitely worth reading. I think it could have been a great book, if only the authors had paid more attention to the full range of social behaviors that go into the negotiation of prestige and not focused so narrowly on purely verbal ones (which are seen as constituting "the discourse" but I suspect are often no more than after the fact rationalizations of things worked out in much more down to earth ways).

I give it five stars for the first chapter and 3 1/2 stars for the rest, and 4 stars for the book as a whole.

Most enlightening analysis of the perplexing categories delineating the Western Art World
By dominique de Gery
This frank, direct analysis of the current attitudes in the western, American dominated art world is not for the faint of heart. It's aim is anatomical rather than judgmental, which can, at times, feel brutal. The authors have done a thorough job of identifying and describing the discourse and undercurrents of the art world's pluralistic structure, by describing three separate but unequal parts: Professionalism, Amateurism, and finally, almost as a postscript, Outsider art.
"Artworld Prestige" addresses the issue of why the current erudite, art world elite have decreed not only painting but perhaps all Art as "dead". It covers the theoretical progression from the enlightenment, Duchamp to Sol Lewitt, Damien Hirst and Murakami-Takashi, comparing them to artist like David Hockney, who although popular and certainly respected in the Art World, still has a whiff of amateurism about his work.
Timothy Van Laar and Leonard Diepeveen refer to an exhaustive number of important scholars, critics and art theorist, to analyse the Artworld's movement away from beauty, pleasure and an appreciation for the technical or material aspects towards a reverence for self-referential theorizing. In its relatively few pages, this book has managed to include an impressive number of need-to-know contemporary players.
Ultimately, however, I was left with the rather depressing conclusion that the art world mimicked the contemporary social/economic American system too closely for comfort. While it is a demonstrable truth that prestige is conferred democratically by the many upon the few and rare, the mechanisms here describe an elitist stratification. Although the artistic dialogue has progressed, art is still very much tied to the material world by the nature of its patronage.
This book has a great deal to offer students, collectors, art enthusiast and scholars, whether through its thoughtful and comprehensive definitions, or its list of sources and examples.
