Not quite...
By Sanya
I took a risk and pre-ordered this book months ago before more specific information was available. The description is rather up front now in calling this a book about paper crafting. Despite any connotations the title might hold, the projects in this book are generally not traditional origami. You will need many sheets of paper (some circular), scissors, glue, wire, and an assortment of other small doohickeys.
I'm going to keep it because I think it's worth the price I paid initially, buuuuttt I still have a few issues with it.
I'll start by saying that the book itself is gorgeous. Thick, glossy pages with beautiful photography. It's very visually appealing and lovely to look through and hold. I've never liked this binding format for craft books because they have trouble staying open unless you weigh the pages down or crack the spine, but eh, what else can you do?
My main beef with this book boils down to the fact that it feels like it's full of a lot of filler. To explain the layout, after the table of contents, the book is split unto 3 main sections-single flowers, flower balls, and fancy decoration. Each section has several project ideas. The project ideas are presented with a fancy full page picture on one side, and a few steps worth of written directions on the other page. There are very few diagrams in these sections because all the main diagrams in this book are listed in the back, as well as some templates.
To be clear, out of 123ish pages, about 25 are dedicated to pure diagrams and some how-to's and other tips, and there are 2 template pages. Of the remaining 100 or so pages, about half of them are full-color pictures. Further, many of the flowers shown are extremely similar and have only slight variation in shape or theme. Many of the models are based off of the same things. If you've made a basic flower kusudama before, these will look very familiar. For an example of this kind of repetition, a traditional lily, a lily with a far base (which is also a slight variation on a lily), a two lilies put together, another lily with a closer base, a ball of lilies, and an upside down lily with some beads are all listed as different projects in different sections. You'll find similar variations throughout the book where extremely similar models are highlighted and separated because they're made of a different material, color, or a slight fold.
I have nothing against variations. I absolutely love that small changes can lead to big differences in the end result, but I think that it's a bit odd to have a book so dedicated to listing fairly minor variations as individual projects. It makes the organization seem jumbled (because the variations aren't grouped into "families" that are easy to navigate) and really gives the impression that they're trying to pad a small amount of material.
Don't get me wrong, the results are absolutely gorgeous and wonderful to look at; I just feel like this book doesn't have too much innovation or meaningful variations. Unless you are absolutely smitten with the full color photos, I would suggest borrowing from a library instead--because once you get the ideas behind the base flowers, the variations are not at all hard to remember (especially if you're already fairly familiar with paper crafts).

"Floragami"--quite different
By becky l brown
"Floragami" is quite different than any of my recent origami instruction books. Each section of the book is dedicated to a specific type of fold or flower style. I particularly enjoy folding the flowers and decorations with circles. The color photography is excellent, and the pictures are large enough to give you a sense of what the project should look like after it is completed. The instructions build from single flowers to the final chapter of kusudama and decorations for various occasions. The only drawback I've had with "Floragami" are the instructions (step-by-step). The instructions are located at the back of the book, so you're flipping back and forth which breaks the continuity of the folding. Also, I do wish the author had listed the paper sources for the beautiful papers used in the projects. There are many fold styles that can built upon with your own creativity.

Excellent photography
By W. Joycegiampapa
The ideas are fantastic, photographs, etc., but as I read in a previous review, no sources for the products, etc.. I even got on the web-site and could not find where he buys his products. Very frustrating thing when you buy the book because you like to make the flowers, why else?
