The second installment on Moskalenko's survey of the French

After a quirky detour into the realm of chess pedagogy with Revolutionize Your Chess Moskalenko returns to the writing of pithy opening manuals with "The Wonderful Winawer." The astute reader would do well to consider this as a continuation of Moskalenko's survey of the French Defence, Flexible French: Strategic Explanations & Surprise Weapons for Dynamic Players, to which he occasionally refers, but both volumes also stand alone. Both books are of similar length (WW 272 pages/FF 279) with about 30 pages devoted to 2 Black Winawer sidelines in FF. In WW Moskalenko tackles the mainline Poisoned Pawn in about 40 pages with what he refers to as a "skeleton repetoire." In general, he does a good job of covering almost all earlier deviations for both White and Black but I was disappointed with his response to Larsen's 5.Qf3 idea in the Exchange Winawer (which Watson did an excellent job rehabilitating in Dangerous Weapons: The French: Dazzle Your Opponents) which consists of one sentence: "Black gets an excellent game after the most precise move 5...Qe7+!" As always, I enjoyed Moskalenko's writing (name another chess author who would include a line such as "For this important game against Grischuk, Leinier Dominguez had prepared a Banana Daiquiri cocktail--with a little poison!") and the inclusion of photos of various players. Vive la France!

Another Moskalenko masterpiece!

Dear Readers,
Do not buy this book unless you have already purchased "THE FLEXIBLE FRENCH" by the same author!! You will regret it sincerely! This book is a continuation of the FF and ONLY covers the Winawer Variation of the French D. Most White players play 3. Nd2 instead of 3. Nc3 so the FF book will be much more valuable to you. Having said that, "Why should you purchase this book?" The immediate answer is, "to lead your opponent down the slippery slope of complications when 3. Nc3 Bb4 IS played!" If you want an "outside of the box" variation then the Winawer is truly it! Victor Moskalenko's book IS wonderful and gives a very detailed analysis and history of this variation in this regard. I sense the author couldn't include this work in the FF book since it would have been too much for digestion and retention. Very good decision on part of the author and publishers. The WW book has three parts:

P1: "Black and White Deviations"
P2: "The Sub and Old Winawer" and
P3: "The Ultimate Winawer" for a total of eleven chapters.
Each chapter is broken into detailed analysis of the mainline opening moves of the WW with the following improvements:

1. the reference game moves are in bold print and commented,

2. the primary alternative moves are in bold italics; branching into sub-variations and alternate variations with sub-variations outlined by A) then A1), A2), B), then B1a), B2) etc. followed by numbered sub-variations as needed,

3. Even more sub-titled analysis diagrams are added to improve the reading and visual flow of the book, after the main alternate moves and sub-variations.

4. the author gives a statistical reference and history beginning each chapter, helping the reader know the number of games researched for the variation and winning potential if used, also with a comment, and

5.the reference games come from mostly exclusive French players or French Terminators! (love or hate the french D) Who says the second time around isn't better than the first? All opening guides could take a follow of this book! Black immediately goes for the counter punch in this variation and only has to remember a few lines to play well, meanwhile White has to prove his ability. Again this book teaches you how to play this French variation and if you have purchased the FF by the same author you will be ready for play.
P1 covers deviations after 3. Nc3 Bb4 mostly encountered using statistics;

P2 covers without the exchange on c3 with the sub Winawer chps. 4 & 5, 4. e5 c5 5. a3 and with c3 exchange the Old Winawer chps. 6 (Armenian variation), 7 (Knight system) and 8 (Eingorn variation);

P3 covers the Ultimate Winawer in chps. 9 (Warsaw variation) 10 Poisoned Pawn variation (PPV)) and 11 (Black Queen Blues (BQB)). Commonly played lines from professional games are deeply analised and commented with improvements to the referenced game moves.
As a reader, you shouldn't expect repertoire books to hold your hand through a chess game but be a good guide, allowing you to develop your own style and creativity during play. Our play improves knowing what to do at the appointed time and situation. This book and author's writing style help you accomplish that task. I had the opportunity to play this variation in CC play right off the starting block after purchasing this book and wow! I'm holding my own against master players! Buy this book and enjoy the wondrous Winawer ride!! If you have the opportunity to play this variation as BLACK, White players will not know what hit them!

It misses something

Even though the book brings new ideas about the winawer, i think the analisys are too much extensive.There are to many sub variations to check, but the explanations of the main ideas doesn't follow the flexible french standard, what let the presented concepts a bit weaker.
I recomend the flexible french, but this one is not so good.

The classic and definitive self-help guide for women survivors of sexual abuse, The Courage To Heal is a tool for recovery that works. This is also the book often cited by those who challenge the credibility of incest survivors. Some survivors of childhood abuse recover memories of these traumatic early experiences years after the original events, and it is these recovered memories that are said to be false memories, implanted in the allegedly impressionable minds of survivors. I was curious to see how this revised and expanded third edition would differ from the much maligned first. In addition to an Afterword that carefully analyzes and refutes the false memory syndrome argument, the authors have made revisions throughout the book which offer guidelines for assessing confusing memories. The authors' commitment to survivors is clear throughout the book, beginning with the book's endorsements, which come not from therapists, but from anonymous survivors. This books is very informative. I had a lot of trouble because it triggered so many things. I am currently in therapy so I am getting help. I had to stop reading this because it was too hard.

This book helped me so much. I knew I had been attacked as a child and my mother confirmed it, but she wouldn't tell me what happened. This book helped me to remember and deal with how the event affected me.

This book and the book called " I Never told Anyone " after many many more months I decided to seek professional help for the first time. I have big issues , with trust, for your taking me on as a patient, you better be willing to really listen.

All around practical, useful, effective.

I was fortunate enough to listen to a podcast/interview with this author and then decided to purchase her book. I found it extremely well thought out and well written. First, the introduction gives the reader a clear view of what will be covered--no time or words wasted. Toward the end of the intro is a table of the possible types of conflict, options for handling each, and reaction tendencies. The table serves to define terms and provides direction--all in about a ½ page. The rest of the intro includes a list of 8 approaches to beginning the conversation to resolve the conflict. That sort of condensed introductory info makes the following content easy to remember and then put into practice.
The text itself is a reflection and continuation of the author's ability to keep the material well organized and simple to grasp. This makes the book a functional, down-to-earth reference.
Since purchasing this, I have since discovered it is also available as part of a set that includes "tools and powerpoint." However, I do not see that on the Amazon site, though I believe there is way to request it through the Amazon Assistant browser extension.
One final word: as a suggestion to the reader, keep in mind this approach to solving conflict works with ALL relationships, not just professional ones. This would definitely be effective for personal relationships too.

In this beautifully packaged, easy-to-read guidebook to handling conflict, Amy Gallo makes the most difficult of conversations workable, perhaps even comfortable. Packed with good practical advice, Gallo has relied on both a corps of experts plus her own experience in writing dozens of articles for the Harvard Business Review. Gallo covers everything that any reader who has to deal with conflict (all of us!) needs to know and do. She even deftly covers rare situations like how to handle a transaction when your counterpart is suffering from a mental illness. Checklists, tables, charts and brief summaries make Gallo's wise insights even more usable.

Diagnosing the psychiatric condition of dead historical figures is risky business, and in a largely unconvincing book, Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Gartner falls prey to the modern tendency to reduce an individual's actions to a psychiatric diagnosis. He argues that hypomania--a mild form of mania--drove many of America's most famous leaders and entrepreneurs to succeed. The characteristics of hypomania include a restless energy channeled into wildly grand ambitions, a tendency toward euphoria and a feeling of being destined to change the world. In nine brief psychobiographies, Gartner imposes this diagnostic scheme on figures ranging from Christopher Columbus and John Winthrop to David O. Selznick and Craig Venter, the genome entrepreneur. He also contends that hypomania is a peculiarly American trait. Applying terms like "depression" and "hypomania" to Winthrop's spiritual ups and downs, for instance, is anachronistic and reductionist. Gartner does provide some proof of his theory with Venter, whose life and work can be scrutinized firsthand, though he hasn't been on Gartner's couch. The author offers us few useful insights into the lives of these historical figures, nor does he seem to have any qualms about framing his case for an "American temperament" solely in male terms.

John Gartner's unique new book is a tour de force It is a page turner which I could not put down. Dr. Gartner brings to life men from each of America's five centuries as he interweaves his story of how genetically driven mood alteration altered America. Hypomania is a form of bipolar disorder that gave these men the restless energy, incessant sleepless speech and work capacities that made them world altering giants, but also the impulsivity, reckless speech, and, with most, delusional excesses which sowed the seeds of their ultimate personal decline. The book reads like a novel but cites an impressive array of sources in over 800 footnotes to document his thesis that America is a nation of immigrants who come here because of their bipolar genes. This "immigrant drive" made America a leader in business, the arts, science, religion and finance, and Dr. Gartner demonstrates how with literary skill and clincal accuracy.

He writes of the supreme accomplishments and pathological excesses of Christopher Columbus, 17th century religious leaders, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Carnagie, the Hollywood Selznicks and Mayers, and the discoverer of the human genome Craig Venter. In each chapter Dr. Gartner gives the reader the background history, and sociological and technological information necessary to highlight the significance of the person's achievment. He uses written sources, but also has impressively and extensively interviewed biographers, colleagues, decendents, and

virtues of the manic end

Carrie Fisher, in addition to acting, is the author of acclaimed novels, and is a highly respected "script doctor." She is also bipolar, and has commented, "It's not all bad. The manic end is a lot of fun... just fantastic."

Dr. Gartner argues that mania and hypomania - the "manic end" of the mood spectrum - are radically different. He acknowledges that mania "is a severe illness... Manic episodes almost always end in hospitalization. People who are highly energized, and also in most cases psychotic, do bizarre things that are dangerous, frightening, and disruptive."

In the book, he gives clear explanations based on his clinical experience, plus stories of accomplished people which support the main theme of the book: that many, perhaps most, successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople are hypomanic.

It is easy to find many examples of leaders in business and the arts who show the typical range of traits: "filled with energy... flooded with ideas... driven, restless, and unable to keep still... often works on little sleep... feels brilliant, special, chosen, perhaps even destined to change the world... can be euphoric... is a risk taker..."

It is helpful to understand these qualities are not necessarily pathological, but positive qualities that talented people can use for success.

Dr. Gartner's Hypomanic Patient

I am a former patient of Dr. Gartner and a mentalhealth professional as well. In reading his book and then reading some of the reviews( especially the NY Times interview) I began to wonder if we were all reading the same book. I found the book to be entetaining, funny and astoundly accurate. I have treated many patients who are exactly as John describes in his book. I my self have or have had most of the characteristics described in "the Hypomanic Edge". When I spoke with Dr. Gartner last week he asked me what I thought, I told him you "got it right!". I have long held the view that most of the written material in field is just recycled trivia, completely useless. This book is ground breaking and we need more of John Gartner and less of Dr. Phil and his ilk who write books that are more Jacquline Susan and about as usefull as the novel "Love Story".

About the Author
A 25 year veteran of the coaching profession, with twenty-two of those years spent as a varsity head coach, Coach Kevin Sivils amassed 464 wins and his TEAMs earned berths in the state play-offs 19 out of 22 seasons with his TEAMs advancing to the state semi-finals three times. An eight time Coach of the Year Award winner, Coach Sivils has traveled as far as the Central African Republic to conduct coaching clinics. Coach Sivils first coaching stint was as an assistant coach for his college alma mater, Greenville College, located in Greenville, Illinois. Coach Sivils holds a BA with a major in physical education and a minor in social studies from Greenville College and a MS in Kinesiology with a specialization in Sport Psychology from Louisiana State University. He also holds a Sport Management certification from the United States Sports Academy. In addition to being a basketball coach, Coach Sivils is a classroom instructor and has taught U.S. Government, U.S. History, the History of WW II, and Physical Education and has won awards for excellence in teaching and Teacher of the Year. He has served as an Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director and has also been involved in numerous professional athletic organizations. Sivils is married to the former Lisa Green of Jackson, Michigan, and the happy couple are the proud parents of three children, Danny, Katie, and Emily. Rounding out the Sivils family are three dogs, Angel, Berkeley, and Al. A native of Louisiana, Coach Sivils currently resides in the Great State of Texas.

Lacey and Grenville's Excellent Egyptian Adventure.

According to the author's notes at the end of this, Book 11 of the Captain Lacey Regency Mystery Series, she has had this book's basic idea in mind since early days of the series. And now seemed like a good time in Lacey's life to have him hie off to Egypt with good friend Lucius Grenville. But however much Lacey has always wanted to accompany Grenville on his travels to Egypt, it's just *not* at this particular moment in his life. His wife Donata will be giving birth to their first child in a few months and he feels the need to hover. But Donata does not feel like being hovered over and arranges for his "abduction".

So off they go: Grenville, his two footmen Bartholomew and Mattias, Lacey, and Thomas Brewster, strongman of London crime lord James Denis (and whom Denis has been having serve as "bodyguard" to Lacey for some time now). This is not just a sightseeing tour of foreign parts. Enigmatic Denis also has tasked Lacey with the finding of a valuable manuscript which had once resided in the library of Alexandria. Naturally, Lacey being Lacey, finding this and doing sightseeing won't be all he'll spend his time on.

Since most familiar recurring characters have stayed behind in England for this book, there'll be new secondaries to meet up with, many eccentric expats from various European countries, and native Turks and Egyptians. Of course there will be a murder to investigate and, if you read Book 10, you'll remember the mysterious man back in England who was threatening Lacey and his family and actually even shot Brewster in one attempt on Lacy's life. Wonder of wonders, he shows up here in Egypt.

So Lacey and Company find danger and mysteries on the streets of Alexandria and Cairo, in the desert, in temples, tombs and tunnels of ancient times, and, of course, they manage to come out relatively unscathed and with a few mysteries solved. Then it's back home before Donata is to deliver their new baby (who Lacey is convinced will be a girl. We shall see.).

This was a fun change of pace. I enjoyed the exotic setting, the comradery of Lacey and Grenville and the growing friendship and respect between Lacey and Brewster, and am looking forward to Book 12, A MYSTERY AT CARLETON HOUSE, which will obviously take place back in London.

(One more thing must be said: I would like to express my appreciation to Ashley for this historical mystery series. It continues to be of excellent quality and, in addition, the bargain-hunter in me loves the very reasonable price of the books. Thanks, Ashley Gardiner/Jennifer Ashley.)

A "ripping good yarn"

This long-awaited book in the Captain Lacey series didn't disappoint. Well-written and edited as are all Ashley Gardner books, it was a pleasure to read. The Egyptian setting gave the author plenty of scope to play with and the result is a "ripping good yarn", with various colourful characters including Turkish cavalrymen, a murderous Turkish soldier, and an English woman with designs on Grenville. James Denis is still up to his tricks and is using Lacey to do his dirty work for him unbeknownst to Lacey, who thinks he is on an entirely different mission. The mysterious stranger who is trying to shoot Lacey turns up in Egypt and we get some resolution as to his identity and reasons, however, we will have to wait for the next book which will hopefully give us the rest of his story.

A man's man...

I've loved Gabriel Lacey since I encountered him through a fortuitous BookBub purchase of the first book in the series, The Hanover Square Affair. While I won't count this book, The Alexandria Affair as my favorite, it's still a very solid entry. What makes it a bit different from other books in the series is the fact that Captain Lacey is solidly in the company of men throughout the entirety of the story. Women play a very peripheral role.

By his own admission, Lacey is at his most charming, most complete and settled when in the company of women, especially his beloved wife, Donata. Late in her pregnancy and much to his chagrin, she has Lacey bundled off to explore Egypt with his friend Lucius Grenville and in the company of Brewster, James Denis' henchman assigned as bodyguard to Lacey, and two footmen/valets, Mathias and Bartholomew. Once there, they encounter murder, mystery and mayhem...the usual stuff of a Lacey mystery.

Bottom line: this is another absorbing, if a bit slow, entry into the series. On the plus side, the reader is treated to a look at Egypt on the cusp of its emergence into the modern world as well as a glimpse into the world of men as they go exploring. Despite the pluses, I missed the romance and wit of the interchanges between Gabriel and Donata and I missed his paternal musings resulting from conversations with his adult daughter, Gabriella and his growing stepson, Peter. I will, nevertheless, look forward to the next book in the series to find out the sex of his baby and the development of the Captain's relationship with his alleged cousin, Gabriel Marcus Lacey.
